    Therapy for Codependency in Petaluma

Codependency is a habitual and often unconscious pattern of interaction in relationships that can be very painful. Originally applied to family members and friends of those struggling with addiction, the term has taken on broader meaning. Codependency involves a compelling preoccupation to help, “fix,” or change another person while placing low priority on your own wants and needs.

Frequently, individuals struggling with codependency hold unrealistic hopes about others’ behavior and feel disappointed and victimized when their hopes are not realized. While the person that is the object of your codependency may appreciate your attention, it is not uncommon for them to grow resentful. From the outside, it appears that the codependent individual is in denial, lacks assertiveness, and is compliant.
